The Tickle Tree is a wonderfully lyrical fantastic story, taking the reader on a journey through the imagination. The artwork is fabulous and the words spiral around the page, perfectly fitting into the art. In places, the words are props for the characters to use to leap from page to page. Each playful, imaginative scene comes from escapades during play hours: playing outside, building a fort, playtime with siblings or friends, exploring buildings and locations. It all builds up to the greatest adventure, the one that happens while dreaming. The Tickle Tree is a bedtime story. The crazy playtime scenes are interspersed with quieter somber night time images of a castle or town lit up by night lights. The writer and illustrator fully embraces imaginary creatures and places, which for an adult, makes the book somewhat nostalgic and achingly sweet.
